Rite Of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

RCIA is the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults into the Catholic Faith. The Lima Catholic Churches work in collaboration to offer these classes. They are held every week on Wednesday evenings at 5:00 p.m. at the St. John parish office building.

If you are:
  • A non baptized adult
  • Baptized in another Christian Church and are interested in knowing more about the Catholic Church, with or without the intention of becoming a member
  • A baptized Catholic who never received Reconciliation, Eucharist, or Confirmation
  • Interested in knowing more about the Catholic church with or without the intention of becoming a member

Catechesis Of The Good Shephard

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a program that helps young children develop their own personal relationship and enjoyment with God, thru Scripture readings from the bible and hands on work with the materials provided in the Atrium. The program is offered to children age 3 through the 2nd grade.

Program is held on Sundays 10:45 am - 12:15 pm in basement at St. John.

Prep Handbook

Reception of The Sacraments

The Sacraments of First Penance and First Eucharist will be celebrated upon completion of the requirements. Confirmation will be celebrated upon completion of the requirements and when the Bishop or his representative celebrates the sacrament in the parish.

Please note:

The Diocese of Toledo requires children to have at least 2 years of religious education before the reception of any of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Holy Eucharist and Confirmation).

PREP REGISTRATION

ALL young people attending pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade in Non-Parochial schools should be registered with St. John and St. John PREP.

Registration forms are available through the sign up days at each parish or by going to the Forms button on this website. If your child is new to the PREP program and has not been baptized at St. John or St. John, please include a copy of the Baptismal Certificate with registration.

Active Membership is determined by 3 things:
  • Being registered in the parish for one year
  • Faithful attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation
  • The weekly use of the envelope system in support of the parish. Envelopes are to be placed in the collection basket at Sunday Masses or the Saturday Vigil.

Fees for the Parish Religious Education Program are $25.00 per student.

Please make registration checks payable to St. John Parish. Individuals having difficulty paying this fee should contact the CRE to make other arrangements.

PREP PROCEDURES

Combined St. John/St. John PREP for grades K - 8 will be held in St. John cafeteria from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Attendance:

Attendance is important in order to assure that the student is getting the information that is required. This is especially important if the child is making a sacrament. Additional assignments or makeup work may be needed if we do not feel comfortable with the amount of information that the student has learned. Please feel free to contact Amanda Mick with any questions that you may have.

Cancellation of Class:

In the event that classes would be cancelled because of weather Amanda will text you. Please do not call the Rectory. Parents and guardians should use common sense in regard to transporting their children. Rural road conditions may be very different from those in Lima. If weather conditions are too bad where you are located please call to tell us your child will not be attending class that day. If classes are cancelled due to weather a make-up class may be scheduled.

Responsibilities of Parents:

Religious Education can be effective only to the extent that parents regularly participate at Eucharist, nurture prayer life in the home, are involved in parish activities and strive to live daily by gospel values.

Participation at Sunday Eucharist:

PREP (Parish Religious Education Program) can be understood only in the broader context of the Church as a whole. Children who participate in PREP must also be present when the Church gathers for Eucharist on Sunday.

Rite of Penance:

Children are encouraged to go to Confession with their parents and guardians as frequently as possible. Parish / Family Penance Services will be scheduled several times during the year for the students. Parents and Guardians will be informed of these dates in the bulletin and notices will be sent home with the children.

Responsibilities of Students

In addition to attending classes regularly, students are expected to participate fully, complete all assignments and conduct themselves in a Christian manner and exhibit that same Christian manner towards fellow students and catechists.

Conduct:

If a child is disrupting the classroom, the catechist will meet with the child after class to discuss his/her behavior. If the CRE deems it necessary, the parents will be asked to come in for a conference, and at that time the coordinator may suggest other alternatives for religious education.

Special Circumstances

Special Education:

Parents of students with any type of learning or physical disability should note this on the student's registration form.

Learning Disabilities:

Every effort will be made to work with the parents and student so that the child may participate in the classroom. Other provisions will be made for those students who are not able to handle the classroom experience, either by home-schooling or by the parents acting as aides in the classroom.

Custody Issues:

Please include on the registration form any custody issues that involve your child. If at anytime during the year, custody arrangements change, please notify the CRE. This information will help us ensure your child's safety.

Praying The Rosary



  1. Make the Sign of the Cross and say "Apostles Creed."
  2. Say the "Our Father."
  3. Say three "Hail Marys."
  4. Say the "Glory be to the Father."
  5. Announce the First Mystery; then say the "Our Father."
  6. Say ten "Hail Marys," while meditating on the Mystery.
  7. Say the "Glory be to the Father." After each decade say the following prayer requested by the Blessed Virgin Mary at Fatima: "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy."
  8. Announce the Second Mystery: then say the "Our Father." Repeat 6 & 7 and continue with the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Mysteries in the same manner.
  9. Say the "Hail, Holy Queen" on the medal after the five decades are completed.

Apostles' Creed

Hail, Holy Queen

The Joyful Mysteries are said on Monday and Saturday, the Sorrowful Mysteries on Tuesday and Friday; the Glorious Mysteries on Wednesday and Sunday; and the Luminous Mysteries on Thursday. Joyful Mysteries are optional on Sundays during Advent and Christmas Season. Sorrowful Mysteries are optional on Sundays during Lent.
